1410 Zagorje ob Savi
In 2012, the Bee-keepers society of Zagorje created a small park on the slope between their headquarters and a chapel on one side and Medija castle ruins on the other – the park also includes the Valvasor’s bee-keeping trail. The purpose of this short trail is to learn about bees and their life as well as about honey and other things that bees gather or produce. The learning trail is named after the famous gatherer of knowledge Janez Vajkard Valvasor, who spent his childhood at the Caste Medija and whose final resting is supposed to be the family tomb in the castle’s chapel. And if Valvasor wrote without shame into his most famous work Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (Slava vojvodine Krajnske) that “sweet is the fruit of labour”, this still holds true for bees even today.
A short but interesting trip around the park and the learning trail starts with the introduction of Janez Vajkard Valvasor and the Castle Medija. While the castle has already crumbled and became a ruin, the restored chapel still remains and interesting monument of past times, and its built-in plates keep reminding the visitors of their once excellent neighbour.
Valvasor's bee-keeping learning trail includes several posts with interesting information. You can find their descriptions at the website of the Bee-keeping society Zagorje.
